Rescuing High-Risk Dogs, Changing Lives

At Akira Animal Rescue, we rescue dogs facing euthanasia and those most vulnerable to illness within the shelter system. Our mission is to fully rehabilitate every dog in our care before finding them a loving, permanent home. We step in when others step away, giving each dog the medical care, attention, and love they need to thrive.

Our Pack

At Akira Animal Rescue, our mission is to fully rehabilitate every dog that joins our pack. While not every condition is curable, we do everything we can to manage chronic or medical challenges, ensuring each dog is ready for a happy, healthy life in their forever home.

Hi, I’m Riley — and I’m…

ready to be someone’s heart dog.
I was surrendered to North Central Shelter with a dog everyone thinks might be my dad. The shelter was scary for me… too loud, too chaotic, too confusing. I shut down completely and couldn’t show anyone who I really was. Things got so bad I landed on the euthanasia list.

But the second I walked out of those shelter doors with Akira Animal Rescue, everything changed.

My whole personality lit up — like, instantly. I finally felt safe, and the real me came out: sweet, gentle, playful, loving… all the things I couldn’t show in the shelter.

Here’s who I am now:

✨ I’m a big brother at heart.
I love the other dogs in my foster home, especially the younger ones. I’m patient, kind, and love teaching them how to play.

✨ I’m cat-friendly!
Yep. I think cats are pretty cool. I respect their space and don’t bother them.

✨ I bond deeply.
Once I trust you, I really trust you. I follow you, check in with you, and just want to be close.

✨ I’m gentle and easy to have around.
No chaos here — I’m a soft, loving boy who wants to fit in and make my humans happy.

✨ I’m ready for a stable, loving home.
I’ve learned that once I feel safe, I can shine. I just need someone who’ll give me that chance.

I’ve been through a lot, but I didn’t give up — I just needed someone to see me.

If you’re looking for a loyal, sweet, grateful companion who will love you with his whole heart… I’m right here. 💛

Hi, I’m Fiona. 🐾

I’m a cautious, shy girl who’s learning that humans can be kind—though I may have had some rough experiences in my past. I think I might have been mistreated by a woman, which makes me feel safer around men. I absolutely adore male humans and dogs, and I’m cat-friendly too! 🐶🐱

Right now, I’m not ready for adoption. I’m still learning to trust and feel safe, but I’m making progress every day thanks to my amazing foster, Ozzy. He gives me love, patience, and treats, and I feel so lucky to have him in my life.

I’m looking for a foster or adopter who understands shy dogs need time, patience, and gentle guidance. I love routines, quiet encouragement, and the occasional snack to show me that humans can be friends.

If you’re ready to celebrate small victories and help me feel safe in the world, you might just earn a lifelong, loyal companion. For now, I’m happy in my foster home, but I dream of a day when I can fully trust and love again. 💛

Fostering makes all the difference for dogs like me—thank you for helping us heal.

Hey there, I am your new shining star!

I’m a Pit Bull–Cattle Dog mix, and true to my name, I love to shine. I’m a happy, confident girl who enjoys being the center of attention. I can be a little feisty at times — not in a bad way — I just know what I like and I’m not afraid to say it!

My life didn’t start out easy. When I arrived at South LA Shelter, I had a serious bite wound on my neck, and it’s believed I may have been used as a bait dog. Because of that, I didn’t trust other dogs at first — and honestly, who could blame me?

Thanks to the patience, structure, and love from my amazing foster, I’ve made incredible progress. I now live peacefully with several other dogs, including my buddy Rocko! I’ve learned that not all dogs are scary, and that sharing space can actually be pretty nice.

That said, I appreciate clear boundaries. Immature dogs who don’t respect my personal space can get under my skin, but with proper introductions, guidance, and time, I can learn to coexist successfully. I do best with confident humans who understand dog behavior and can help set me up for success.

I’m a survivor, a star in my own right, and ready for a home that will let me keep shining. 💫

Hi, I’m Rocko. I was surrendered by my family

I’m a Pit Bull with a heart full of love and a story to tell. When I was surrendered to the shelter, I was listed as being 15 years old — but it turns out that was a bit of a mix-up. The rescue believes my human companion passed away, and their family made the difficult decision to surrender me. I was very confused and heartbroken when I found myself in the shelter after losing the person I loved.

At first, it was thought I would do best as an only dog. But with time, patience, and the right environment, I’ve proven that assumption wrong. Today, I live happily with three other dogs, including Star, and I continue to show that slow, thoughtful introductions make all the difference.

I was transported to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I’ve been thriving with my wonderful foster, Kris. I’m a calm, easygoing guy who appreciates a peaceful environment. While I could absolutely be an only dog, I’m also open to having a canine sibling — as long as we’re introduced slowly and respectfully. Before you know it, I just might become best friends with your resident pup.

I prefer a quiet, low-key home and would do best in an adults-only household where I can relax, feel secure, and enjoy the companionship I’ve been missing.

I’ve lost my person once, but I’m ready to open my heart again — maybe to you. 💛

Hi, I’m Pickles! 🐾

I’m a survivor of Devore Shelter, and like many dogs there, I was misunderstood at first. When I arrived, I was scared and overwhelmed — the shelter is a tough place, especially for a sensitive guy like me. Because I was nervous and dealing with kennel cough, I was labeled “rescue only” and placed on the euthanasia list.

But here’s the truth: I’m not aggressive — I was just afraid. And honestly, a shelter is no place for any dog.

Since being rescued by Akira Animal Rescue, I’ve been coming out of my shell and showing my true personality. I’m incredibly affectionate — at my recent vet visit, I couldn’t stop pawing everyone to ask for pets! When I first meet new people, I may freeze for a moment while I figure things out, but once I realize I’m safe and getting love, my little nub tail starts wagging and I happily lean in.

I’m crate trained and food-motivated (maybe a little too motivated — I use a slow feeder because I tend to guzzle!). I’ve got some nervous energy and could use more walks and leash practice, which would help me settle even more. I also enjoy chewing, so my foster sticks with durable chews like hooves and hard toys — they keep me busy and happy.

I do great with small dogs and dogs around my size (I’m about 35 lbs), but large male dogs can scare me. I’d do best in a home that understands dog dynamics and can help me feel confident and secure. I’m very loyal to my people and a bit protective of them — once you’re my human, I’m all in. 💛

With patience, structure, and love, I truly shine. I’m sweet, affectionate, and just looking for a calm, committed home where I can continue learning that the world is a good place.

Could that be with you?

Hi, I’m Cole your future…

wiggly-butt bestie in training.

So, uh… I didn’t exactly have the smoothest start. I was roaming DTLA with two buddies when boom, life threw me a plot twist and I got hit by a car. Some awesome humans scooped me up (my friends Houdini’d their way outta there), and I ended up at North Central before Akira Animal Rescue took me in.

Everyone thought my swollen leg was a fresh injury, but surprise! Turns out it’s an old fracture. I got a bone biopsy and—good news—no cancer, no infection. Just a cranky bone that needs physical therapy to get me back on track. My rescue is trying hard to raise enough so I can heal up and keep all four of my stylish legs.

Now… personality-wise?

I used to be terrified of humans. Like, “I’ll hide behind this dog because he seems to know what he’s doing” levels of scared. But guess what? I’ve been doing the whole confidence glow-up thing.

These days, I like to approach on my own terms, give you a thoughtful sniff, and decide, “Okay, yeah… this person seems cool.” Once I decide you’re safe, I transform into a goofy, playful, floppy-eared sweetheart. I’m basically a soft boi with dream-boat potential.

If you’re patient, gentle, and down for some physical-therapy teamwork, I promise I’ll give you my whole heart… and probably make you laugh every single day.

Maria | Cattle dog x | 11 m.o.

Hi, I’m Maria, your new playmate!

I am a playful pup who loves life and making new friends — especially other dogs! I came from Devore Shelter and got a second chance at health and happiness thanks to some amazing humans.

I’m full of energy and love, and I thrive when I have furry friends to play with. I’m crate trained and potty trained, and I’m learning my leash manners so I can enjoy walks and adventures with my forever family.

I’m looking for a home that can match my playful spirit, guide me with patience, and share lots of snuggles and playtime. If you’re ready for a sweet, silly, and loving companion, I just might be the perfect fit!

Benny | GSD x | 4 m.o.

Hiiii, I’m Benny… your future $20 bargain-bin baby glow-up!

So, funny story… someone tried to sell me on Facebook for twenty bucks (rude). A kind human swooped in, convinced them to surrender me, and now I’m living my best life with Akira Animal Rescue.

I’m only 8 weeks old, so I’m still getting my vaccinations and everyone’s still figuring out my whole personality package. Translation: I’m not quite adoption-ready yet… but you can apply now! Once I’m fully vaccinated, we can meet and I can show you all my baby-dog charm in person.

What do I love?
• Playing like my tail is on turbo mode
• Sleeping like I pay rent
• Entertaining myself for hours (I’m basically my own TV show)

If you’re looking for a tiny, self-amused potato who’s equal parts wild child and cuddle bug, keep your eyes on me. I’m gonna grow into a seriously awesome dog.

Lucy | Lab Shepsky | 2 m.o.

Sugar| GSD x | 2 y.o.

Hi, I’m Sugar 🍬

My journey didn’t begin the way anyone would hope. I was rescued from Hesperia Shelter along with my baby, Juno. I was a mama just trying to protect my puppy, and one terrible night, everything changed. I was placed in a tight kennel with my baby, and it’s believed my foot became trapped in a drain. I was scared, in pain, and there was no one there to help me.

At first, my injury was misunderstood and explained away as “kennel stress,” which made it harder for me to be seen for who I really was — a loving mom who needed help. Thankfully, Akira Animal Rescue stepped in, saw the truth, and saved both me and my puppy.

I was rushed to CARES, where I received the medical care I desperately needed and had my leg amputated. And you know what? The moment my rescuers picked me up, I was pure joy. I wobbled a bit, paused, then figured it out — because that’s who I am. A survivor.

I spent several weeks recovering with a wonderful medical foster, and once my staples came out, I moved to another foster home. That’s where something magical happened — they fell completely in love with me. Before anyone even realized it, they decided I was already home.

Now I live in beautiful Pasadena with my two amazing parents and my furry brother, Buster. I love playing with him, exploring the outdoors, and yes — I’m quite the hiker! Being a tripod doesn’t slow me down one bit.

I’m resilient, joyful, and full of life. I’m proof that even after the hardest moments, happiness is possible. Akira Animal Rescue didn’t just save my life — they gave me my future, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

With love,
Sugar 💛

Juno | GSD x | 4 m.o.

Hiii, I’m Juno 🌸

I’m Sugar’s daughter, and from the very beginning, I showed everyone that I was something special. When I first arrived at the shelter, I was labeled as being 8 weeks old — but it didn’t take long for my rescuers to realize I was actually closer to 12 weeks old. A small detail, but it turns out I had a lot of growing to do in more ways than one.

After being rescued alongside my mama, I was placed with Sugar’s medical foster. We shared a brief but meaningful reunion before it became clear that my mom needed quiet time to focus on healing. I moved to a foster home nearby, not knowing that I was about to find my forever family.

My fosters quickly saw how intelligent, curious, and loving I was. We bonded through training, playtime, and lots of affection — and let’s be honest, I was spoiled like the princess I am. 👑 It didn’t take long for all of us to realize that this wasn’t temporary.

After just one month, my foster family made it official and adopted me. Now I’m exactly where I belong, growing, learning, and being loved every single day.

I’m beautiful, smart, affectionate, and truly one of a kind — and I’m so grateful my story led me home.

With love,
Juno 💛

Lilliana | Pit bull x | 11 m.o.

Roo | Dachshund x | 6 m.o.

Hi! I’m Roo! I might be part hound (my howls are pretty adorable!), and I love showing everyone just how much love I have to give. I have a special way of making you feel like the most important person in the world. I get so excited when you walk in the room that it’s like I’ve missed you forever…even if we’ve never met! I’m the happiest girl around—carefree, playful, and full of love. I make little sounds when I’m excited or asking for pets, and I’ll always put a smile on your face.

But I haven’t had it easy. I came to rescue with distemper, a serious virus that only 20% of puppies survive, and a broken leg. Thanks to my incredible foster, Stephanie, I got round-the-clock care, lots of love, and all the medical attention I needed. I worked hard, healed beautifully, and now I’m stronger and ready to share my joy with a forever family.

I still have a few vet visits ahead—some vaccines and my spay—but nothing can stop my happy spirit. I’m ready to meet my forever person, fill your life with laughter, and show you how much love one little girl can hold.

Could you be my forever person? I promise I’ll make it worth it! 💛

Penny Lane | Pit bull x | 5m.o.

Hi, I’m Penny Lane …— the little fighter who battled pneumonia, beat the odds, and found the family of my dreams.

Before Akira Animal Rescue stepped in, I was in rough shape. My body was worn down, and I came in fighting pneumonia along with a handful of other illnesses that made every day feel like an uphill climb. I was exhausted, scared, and honestly… I wasn’t sure what my future looked like.

But Akira believed in me.

With treatment, rest, and round-the-clock care, I slowly started to turn the corner. My breathing got stronger. My energy came back. And my personality—sweet, gentle, and a little spicy—finally had room to shine. Once I knew I was safe, I could finally be me.

And then the best thing ever happened…

I was adopted!
Now I have a forever family who loves me endlessly, plus a big brother named Parker who welcomed me like he’d been waiting for me the whole time. He taught me the house rules, shares his toys (most of them), and makes sure I’m never alone. We play, nap, and basically operate as a two-dog happiness machine.

From pneumonia to paradise, I got my miracle ending — a home, a brother, and humans who adore me.

Penny Lane survived, healed, and blossomed… and now I’m living the life every dog deserves. 💛

Hatchi | Bull Herder | 2 y.o.

Leila | Pit bull x | 2 y.o.

Hi, I’m Selene — formerly…

a forgotten mama, now a spoiled queen with a forever family.

Before my rescue, I lived a rough life. I was used as a breeding machine and never got to be “just a dog.” When I landed at SEAACA, my body was exhausted and my immune system couldn’t catch a break. I became so sick that I was at risk of euthanasia.

But then… Lori appeared. My amazing foster stepped in and asked Akira Animal Rescue to save me — and that was the moment everything changed.

Once I was safe, I finally had the chance to fight off my bronchitis, rest, and learn how to be a dog again. Dogs like me never get to socialize, so it took time, patience, and gentle guidance to figure out what friendship even felt like.

And guess what? All that healing led me exactly where I was meant to be.

I was adopted in September 2025!
I now have a big brother who taught me manners, confidence, and how fun it is to just be myself. My new mom and dad adore me, spoil me, and play endless games of catch — my absolute favorite.

From breeding machine to beloved family girl… I finally got my happy ending. 🌙💛

Rex | Pit bull | 6y.o.

Hi, I’m Chance…

I was one of the very first pups rescued by Akira Animal Rescue. I came from South LA Shelter with a broken leg, and they were going to put me down because they didn’t want to switch my splints. Luckily, Akira saw me and swooped in just in time. Within a week of being rescued, I had surgery—and thanks to an amazing team, I got to keep my leg with a plate!

Unlike most of the dogs, I stayed in-house, which meant lots of time with the founder and her family. After an adoption fell through, I decided life at the rescue was pretty great—so I’ve been living my best life here ever since.

I’m a fun-loving, goofy boy who wants to be the bestest boy in the world. Sure, I still get a little mischievous sometimes (my sister tricks me a lot!), but I’m also a gentle giant. I especially love playing “dad” when there are puppies in the house—it’s my favorite job!

I still have some quirks we’re working on: big male dogs aren’t really my thing, and I sometimes decide I don’t like how a person is walking. But overall, I’m here to share love, laughter, and a little chaos with everyone at the rescue.
